Name of new Capital pub rings a Bell

A NEW Wetherspoon pub named after one of the Capital's most celebrated inventors is to open its doors this week.

The Alexander Graham Bell, which has been established next to the site of the telephone pioneer's birth, will open to the public on Friday.

The pub chain, which owns three other large bars in the city, has spent 600,000 redeveloping the former Ivory Lounge site on George Street.

It sits just yards from the plaque on 16 South Charlotte Street that marks the birthplace of Bell, whose innovation changed the world.

Phil Weddle, who currently runs The Blacksmith's Forge in Dalkeith, is to manage the new pub.

He said: "I am looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub and am confident that it will be a good addition to Edinburgh's social scene."
