Museum's event won't be the pits

A VICTORIAN weekend designed to recreate various aspects of the era for members of the public is set to take place at the Scottish Mining Museum.

The two-day event, on 17 and 18 July, will give guests the chance to take a guided tour around the coal pit with Victorian coal sorter Aggie McGhee and find out what it was like to work in coal mines and live in their communities during the Victorian era.

A full range of vintage Victorian activities will also be on offer, including Punch and Judy shows, a flea circus and caricatures and traditional games.

Children and adults will also be able to get fully into the spirit by dressing up in Victorian costume.

Gillian Ranking, marketing and event officer at the Scottish Mining Museum, said: "Our Victorian weekend is set to be the biggest event of the summer and will be terrific fun for all of the family.

"The Scottish Mining Museum is steeped in history and is an incredible venue for such a fun, and educational, day out."

The event will run from 10am to 5pm both days and children can attend for free.
