Detective Chief Inspector Stevie Grant, from Strathclyde Police, said their main focus is to find a motive.

He said: “We are currently carrying out extensive inquiries in the local area, including door-to-door enquiries and gathering and reviewing CCTV images.

“James suffered a violent attack within his home and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen or heard anything to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may appear, could be vital in helping us trace whoever is responsible for this crime.”

Extra police are patrolling the area and an incident room has been set up at Partick police station.
