His brother Peter Shields, 47, is being treated at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where doctors said he was in a stable condition.

The men belong to the family of professional boxer and World Boxing Union (WBU) lightweight champion Willie Limond, who expressed his shock at the attack on his uncles.

The 31-year-old, who lives in nearby Garthamlock, told the Scottish Sun: "Louis was a gentleman, never hurt anybody. He never bothered anybody – never, ever."

Police were carrying out door-to-door inquiries today and trawling through CCTV footage for clues.

Detective Inspector David Halliday said: "Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area of Cambuskenneth Place around the time of the incident early on Thursday morning and may have witnessed anything suspicious to come forward to police."
