Murder inquiry after double stabbing

POLICE have launched a murder inquiry after a man was found dead and another seriously injured following a double stabbing in a fight at a block of flats.

The body of the dead man, named locally as Billy McVie, was found in the stairwell of Castleview House, a multi-storey block of flats in the Gilmerton area of Edinburgh.

Another man, aged 41, had also suffered stab injuries, and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Detective Inspector Gary Cunningham, who is leading the investigation, said officers were following "a positive line of inquiry".

Last night, police said a 24-year-old man had been charged with allegedly making threats towards police officers. He was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

The spokesman added that inquiries into the murder and into the stabbing of the second man were ongoing.

Police were called to the scene around 8:45pm on Tuesday.

One 27-year-old woman, who asked not to be named, said she had been drinking with the men shortly before the row erupted. She said that soon after a third man had shown up at the address.

Another local resident, who also did not want to be named, said he had seen four males and three females fighting and arguing outside the block before entering the building shortly before the incident.

"The police told us to stay inside and I saw police vehicles and police in riot gear surrounding the flats."

Yesterday, a forensic team was at the scene.
