A MURDER suspect who was on the run following the stabbing of a man found dead in an alleyway was arrested tonight, police said.

Naeem Majid Butt, 37, from Blackburn, Lancashire, was arrested in Edinburgh over the death of Saheel Ahmed, 24, also from Blackburn.

He will now be brought back to Lancashire where he will be charged with murder, police said.

Mr Ahmed's body was found in an alley at the top of Warrington Street, Blackburn, at around 1.50am on June 22 after police were called to a report of a disturbance.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem revealed the cause of death to be multiple injuries consistent with the use of a blade.

Officers were looking at the theory that it could be an honour-style killing prompted by an alleged affair between the victim and a woman.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Gray, from the Force Major Investigation Team, said: "I would like to thank the media, both in Lancashire and in Scotland, for their assistance, as well as members of the public who have come forward with information.

"I would also like to pay special thanks to our colleagues at Lothian and Borders Police for their assistance with this investigation and their highly professional work."
