Another man, aged 47, remained in a serious condition in the hospital on Saturday morning.

Police said they were following a positive line of inquiry and have launched a murder investigation.

Detectives said it appeared the disturbance had started inside the pub and spilled out onto the street.

Keith McCardle, who owns an electrician business in Musselburgh, said his brother was a well-known and well-liked member of the community.

He told Scotland on Sunday: "It's not exactly clear what has happened, but it's a very difficult time for us.

"He was very well-known and liked by many people."

Detective Inspector John Peaston, who is leading the investigation, said: "At this time we are still trying to determine the full circumstances, which have tragically resulted in one man's death and another man being seriously injured."

He added: "We believe that there may have been a number of potential witnesses from the Club House pub and from the surrounding residential addresses who may be able to assist with our inquiries."
