Murder hunt after boxer's uncle knifed

POLICE launched a murder inquiry yesterday after a knife attack left the uncle of a world champion boxer dead.

Louis Shields, 46, uncle of WBU lightweight champion Willie Limond, was killed in a disturbance at his home in Glasgow's Craigend area.

Officers were called to the flat in Cambuskenneth Place just after midnight on Thursday. Paramedics tried to save Mr Shields, but he died at the scene.

His brother Peter Shields, 47, another of Limond's uncles, is being treated at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where doctors said he was in a stable condition.

The men are both close to Limond, a professional boxer and World Boxing Union lightweight champion, who expressed his shock at the attack.

The 31-year-old, who lives in nearby Garthamlock, said: "Louis was a gentleman, never hurt anybody. He never bothered anybody – never, ever."

Police were carrying out door-to-door inquiries last night and trawling through CCTV footage for clues.

Detective Inspector David Halliday said: "Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area of Cambuskenneth Place around the time of the incident early on Thursday morning and may have witnessed anything suspicious to come forward to police."
