Mum who fled blaze with baby praises firefighters

A MUM who was forced to flee a blaze at her house in Meadowbank with her seven-week-old son has praised firefighters for their quick response.

The 33-year-old woman, who did not want to be named, was woken by her 43-year-old husband about 12.30am yesterday at their ground-floor flat on Lower London Road after he smelt smoke.

She called the emergency services after the couple’s own efforts failed to put out the blaze, which started in the flat’s garden shed.

Four appliances attended the scene and crews used two high-pressure hoses to extinguish the fire, which destroyed the shed and damaged the rear of the flat.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The mother said firefighters had arrived in just minutes
following her call.

She said: “The fire just started to get hold of the flat. The whole kitchen window’s gone – it was down to the brickwork. It was lucky they came as quick as they did.”
