Mum in funding appeal to help research into cystic fibrosis

Edinburgh mum Donna Barclay is calling on residents to support a national campaign to raise money for research into the life-threatening condition cystic fibrosis.

Mrs Barclay is hoping to raise money and awareness because her son Brandon is a sufferer.

Donna, Brandon and a group of ten friends climbed Ben Nevis at the weekend to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and are still appealing for donations.

Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a defective gene that results in the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, becoming clogged with thick sticky mucus resulting in chronic infections and inflammation in the lungs and difficulty absorbing food.

Brandon has to undergo a tough daily treatment regime and also requires occasional hospital stays and courses of intravenous antibiotics.

Donna said: “The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is funding ground-breaking gene therapy research which could stop the lung damage that claims so many young lives. They have already put £30 million into the research and need just £6m more so that the clinical trial can take place next year.”
