Muir statue wins support

ANOTHER statue of a famous Scot could be erected on the Royal Mile after the Scottish Government backed a historian's petition.

Alex Salmond has given his support to the plan to commemorate Thomas Muir, said to be the founding father of Scottish democracy.

Patrick Scott Hogg has gathered more than 500 signatures and will present the campaign to ministers at Holyrood today.

He said: "Scotland should celebrate its heroes. We need principle and integrity in politics today and Muir embodies that."
