MTV awards date for Adele in Los Angeles

The news comes after she was nominated on Tuesday for the Mercury prize and immediately installed as joint favourite to win.

She picked up the MTV nominations, including Video of the Year and Best Pop Video, for her single Rolling In The Deep.

Her second album, 21, is the biggest-selling album of the year.

There was also a nod for folk rockers Mumford and Sons who were nominated for Best Rock Video for The Cave.

Katy Perry leads the pack with nine nominations in the 14 categories with stars including Kanye West, Beyonce and the Beastie Boys also recognised.

"I have nine nominations. I thought that was a typo or something," said Perry. "That's the most nominations I've ever gotten for anything."

Lady Gaga, who had a record-breaking 13 nominations last year, received just three this time around.

Mars and West are to battle it out in the best male video category, alongside Justin Bieber, Cee-Lo Green and Eminem.

The awards will be presented in Los Angeles on 28 August.
