MSP calls for an increase in holiday cover

AN SNP MSP has called for improved protection for consumers in the wake of the collapse of Edinburgh firm Flyglobespan.

Brian Adam said he was concerned that people who purchased a holiday which was not covered by the Atol (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) scheme or who did not purchase by credit card would not receive any compensation.

Now he has tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament and written to the Transport Minister to consider introducing legislation to increase consumer protection.

Mr Adam said: "As people look toward booking holidays for this summer they will be wanting reassurance that if the firm collapses, they will be provided with compensation or assistance.

"After watching the collapse of Flyglobespan, it has become apparent there is an obvious gap in consumer protection. I believe holidaymakers should be protected however or wherever they purchase their vacation.

"The rise of booking holidays direct over the internet has meant more people are booking with companies and airlines that are not covered by Atol."
