MSP calls for more land for allotments

MORE should be done to make public land available as allotments, according to a Lothians MSP.

Sarah Boyack, the shadow cabinet secretary for environment and rural affairs, called on the Scottish Government to do more to encourage the country's gardeners.

She said that in Edinburgh alone there are currently 2300 people on the waiting list for just 1200 allotment plots, with some people waiting up to seven years.

Ms Boyack said: "Over the last decade there has been a dramatic growth in demand for allotment space as people become more aware of the health, environment and lifestyle benefits.

"The SNP Government needs to provide clear guidance to develop wider public sector support. There are vast areas of unused public land which could be made available."
