MP in scam e-mail warning

A CITY MP today warned people not to be taken in by scam e-mails from fraudsters trying to cash in on the current income tax mix-up.

Millions of people are due to receive letters telling them they owe the taxman thousands of pounds or are due a rebate because of errors in the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system.

Last week Edinburgh North & Leith Labour MP Mark Lazarowicz raised the danger of fraudulent e-mails with Treasury Secretary David Gauke in the Commons - but now Mr Lazarowicz has received such an e-mail himself.

He said: "I'm sure most will delete them, but it's when people are feeling nervous about whether they owe tax they might just respond. HMRC has made clear they will not send out e-mails on this issue."
