Movie fan John tells
it like it is – in Scots

THE Evening News recently teamed-up with the National Library of Scotland (NLS) to offer a fantastic prize of £100-worth Cineworld vouchers to the reader who best surprised us with their own take – in Scots, of course – on cinema’s best-loved films.

Scores of fans tried their hand at Scots versions of titles and famous lines from film classics, and John Wailes, of Gorgie Road, scooped first prize with his Forrest Gump inspired effort of “Glaikit is as glaikit dis”. He also won an artwork poster version of his winning quote.

Originally designed to market the exhibition, a series of NLS posters – featuring “Scotified” titles and dialogue from films including the Wizard of Oz and Jerry Maguire – have become a top attraction, sparking comment from around the world.

Going to the Pictures: Scotland at the Cinema, meanwhile, runs until October 28 at the library on George IV Bridge. Entry is free.
