Mourners pay respects to devoted mum

THEY have come in their dozens. A steady stream of mourners, young and old, paying tribute to a young woman whose death has resonated throughout their tight-knit community.

Friends and family of Nattalie Muir joined with horrified residents to leave flowers at the scene of the 21-year-old's death in Brucefield Drive, Whitburn.

One bouquet believed to be from a family member had a card reading: "No words can express how much you will be missed" followed by "Sleep Tight Honey".

The young mother died after being found badly injured in the street by passers-by shortly before 3am on Saturday morning. Three people, including a 15-year-old boy, have since appeared in court in connection with her death.

In a statement, her family said her death had had a "devastating effect" on them.

Her father Callum described Nattalie as "beautiful, loving, caring and generous" adding that she had a "great personality and sense of fun".

The 41-year-old said the whole family was struggling to come to terms with her loss.

"She was a devoted mother to her daughter Paige, and was adored by everyone who knew her.

"Her loss in such tragic circumstances has been a huge shock to all of us but we will always treasure the happy memories of her as a loving mum, sister, daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin and, of course, friend.

"We still cannot believe that this has happened to such a loving and happy young person. We will make sure that Paige will never forget you darling."

Among the tributes was a card reading, "Sadly missed but will never be forgotten" while another had the message read "Always in our hearts. Miss you."

Her death has shaken Whitburn, with local councillor Gordon Beurskins admitting people were "numb" with shock.

Yesterday George Stewart, 34, of West Calder, and a 15-year-old Whitburn boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Livingston Sheriff Court charged with murder. They made no plea or declaration. Mr Stewart was remanded in custody and the teenage boy was remanded to secure accommodation.

Emma Merrilees, 19, from Edinburgh, was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. She made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
