One witness, Tara Simoncic, said: "She was already in the intersection when he hit her. He was going faster than the speed limit."

Mrs McKay-Dalton leaves behind an eight-year-old daughter, Lottie, two sons, Manus and Jones, and her husband, Michael Dalton, who met his future wife while the pair were still in high school in Scotland.

Mr Dalton, 40, has been devastated by the tragedy. He said: "She was everything to me. It's just so horrible, I can't even talk."

Family friend Pat Gleason described the Scotswoman as well-liked and active in her community of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

"She was truly larger than life," he said. "She was extremely witty and funny."

Close family friend Evan Nuttal, 41, said Mrs McKay-Dalton "had an incredibly large personality".

Tributes were being paid to Mrs McKay-Dalton on both sides of the Atlantic this week, with services held in New York and in Callander.
