More Scots infected with HIV in UK

THE number of people in Scotland diagnosed with HIV who were infected within the UK has increased by 50 per cent in a decade, figures reveal.

Health Protection Scotland said that in 2001, 80 of 171 HIV diagnoses were in people believed to have become infected in Scotland. A further 20 picked it up elsewhere in the UK.

But by 2010, 128 cases out of a total of 360 were infected in Scotland, while 23 were from other parts of the UK. HPS is still waiting for information on 74 cases in which it does not know the country of infection.

It comes after Health Protection Agency figures showed the number of people infected with HIV within the UK almost doubled between 2001 and 2010.

New cases jumped from 1,950 in 2001 to 3,780 in 2010.
