More than 50% miss out on Olympic tickets

More than half of the 1.8 million people who applied to get Olympic tickets did not receive any in the ballot, it has been claimed.

About 55 per cent of applicants missed out on getting their hands on any of the 6.6 million tickets publicly available.

A second ballot will be held for the million who were unsuccessful - but no tickets are left for the opening and closing ceremonies or popular events such as the athletics finals. Tickets for cheaper events, such as the BMX and archery events, are also thought to have sold out.

A London 2012 spokesman said: "Those who were unsuccessful in the initial process will have priority in the next round of sales, which start later this month, and they will be contacted soon to inform them about the next steps."

London mayor Boris Johnson was among those who failed to get any tickets.

Fans have complained about the way the ticketing process has been handled.

Those who have been successful in winning tickets still do not know what events they will be able to attend.

People whose cards have failed but have been successful in the ballot could still be contacted by organisers as late as Friday - and people will be told which tickets they have been allocated by 24 June.
