Montrose hairdresser vandalised after fox fur row

The salon, 3Sixty, in Montrose, changes its window display each month and had decided on a Burns theme last month.

It showed a mannequin wearing a tartan bodice and a skirt made out of wigs as well as the fur, which belonged to a member of staff’s great grandmother.

Staff at the shop immediately received a threat telling them that they had 24 hours to remove the fur from the model in the window.

A man, believed to be an animal rights supporter, visited the shop two weeks ago and asked owner Dawn Kerr to take the fur out of the window claiming it was “upsetting everybody in Montrose”.

When the 100-year-old fur was not removed, the same man returned to the shop on January 20 and told a member of staff they had 24 hours to get rid of it.

At that point Ms Kerr took the decision to remove the fur to protect her shop and staff.

In the early hours of Monday morning, red gloss paint was thrown over the frontage of the shop in Murray Street. Police are investigating.

Ms Kerr declined to comment for fear of more reprisals.

Montrose councillor David May said he was “appalled” at the incident.

He said: “Knowing the owners of the shop you couldn’t find nicer people and they have been working hard to build up the business.

“The owners of the shop were not making any comment at all about supporting fox hunting.

“It was a really bright window display.

“This is completely the wrong way to react. I’m very disappointed.

“I really hope the police identify who was involved and appropriate action is taken as soon as possible.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Anyone who has information that could assist officers with their inquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
