Mr Davidson lived at the farm with his wife Jennifer and son Alisdair. It is understood members of his family found him beside the building where he died.

A police spokesman said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Locals said Mr Davidson regularly showed cattle and sheep at all the major shows.

His Saler cattle have won championships at all the leading shows in the country, including the Royal Highland, as well as his local shows at Dumfries and Moffat.

He was also a former office-bearer for NFU Scotland in Dumfriesshire.
