The 34-year-old was delivering milk door-to-door in Beresford Avenue in Trinity when he saw a speeding car crash into a parked Jeep. He called the police when the car reversed into a people carrier before making off down the street.

Mr MacIntyre jumped into his van and pursued the vehicle, catching up with the driver and telling him to stop. But the driver deliberately drove into his van before crashing into two more cars.

The milkman finally managed to block the runaway car in nearby South Trinity Road, before collaring the driver, who tried to flee on foot.

Two of his customers, whose cars were damaged during the incident at around 2.15am on Friday, later called his bosses at McQueens Diaries to give their thanks for his actions.

Police chiefs also praised him for bringing the wrecking spree to an end before anyone was injured.

Mr MacIntyre said: "I was delivering the milk as usual and I hadn't seen a soul for a while except the odd taxi driver. Then this Seat car came flying down the street without any lights on. He smashed into a Jeep at the end of the road.

"I got into my van and started calling the police. I could see the Seat reverse and couldn't believe it when he went straight into a people carrier.

"I pulled up beside him and told him to stop as I had his registration and had called the police. Then he put his foot down and crashed right into the side of my van.

"He drove into South Trinity Road and crashed into a Chrysler and a Ford Focus on that street as well. I caught up and managed to park at an angle which hemmed him in.

"But he didn't give up there. He got out and legged it down the street even though he could barely run straight. I chased after him and caught him at the end of the street. He kept asking me to let him go as he said it was his mum's car and he would get in trouble. He could barely stand up and you could smell the alcohol off him from 20 paces.

"We just sat on a wall and waited for the police to arrive about five minutes later. He failed the breathalyser test and the police took him away."

Mr MacIntyre, who lives in East Kilbride, carries out delivery runs in both Edinburgh and East Lothian after becoming a milkman in November.

He added: "It was really lucky it was that time in the morning and no pedestrians were about because he was all over the place.

"I would say his mother's car was written off and some of the others were badly damaged."

Calum McQueen, officer manager with McQueens Dairies, said: "Two customers whose cars were damaged called to thank Graeme and another two customers also phoned to say thanks. They were pleased the driver hadn't been allowed to get away.

"We always tell our employees to keep an eye out for anything suspicious, as they're often the only people out at that time, so we were pleased with Graeme's efforts."
