Merkel's popularity with public falls

GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel's popularity has dropped to its lowest point since November 2006, a new poll has shown.

The survey showed only 36 per cent of voters would choose the chancellor if there was a run-off between her and Social Democrat parliamentary leader Frank-Walter Steinmeier, down from 39 per cent last week and 60 per cent in 2008.
