Memorial football match nets £6000 for Sick Kids

A FOOTBALL match held in memory of young footballer Craig Gowans raised more than £6000 for the Edinburgh Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

Craig’s parents, Sheila and John, were joined by former Hearts and Hibs player Darren Jackson, Tam Smith from Hutchison Vale FC, Craig’s school friend Gemma Maxwell and former Evening News sports writer Ian MacKay to hand over the £6317 cheque to the SKFF.

The annual memorial match and Craig Gowans Memorial Fund was set up by Sheila and John following 17-year-old Craig’s death in July 2005 when he was electrocuted after the
20-foot-long metal pole for nets he was pushing touched power lines.

This year’s charity football match was an Edinburgh derby, with a Hearts/Hibs select team including Darren Jackson, John Robertson and John Hughes taking on Hutchison Vale.

SKFF chief executive Maureen Harrison said: “The money raised in Craig’s memory will go a long way towards helping us purchase a
replacement people carrier.”
