Crowds began gathering outside the Greenside Place venue more than an hour before the show. Audience members were clapping along to the well-known songs from the start.

May and Taylor received a standing ovation when they joined cast members on stage to perform Bohemian Rhapsody at the end of the show.

The show also featured X Factor finalist Brenda Edwards and I'd Do Anything contestant Ashley Russell – a former Queen Margaret University student.

Afterwards, actors mingled with guests at an after-show party in the Forth Floor bar and restaurant at Harvey Nichols.

Brian May said he was delighted to be back in Edinburgh, although just for one night.

He said: "I love being in Edinburgh. My mother is Scottish, so it's like coming home for me.

"I thought the audience were amazing. They were very responsive. It went really well."

Anthea Turner said she had come along to support her friend Darren Day, who plays the part of villain Khashoggi.

"I've seen it before, but I think it was tighter this time and more polished. It was nice to see him do something a bit different."

Kevin Kennedy, who is better known as Curly Watts in Coronation Street, was also having a good night. He said: "I love Edinburgh and this show was better than I expected."

And Australian star, Michael Falzon, who plays Galileo, said the location had been one of his reasons for accepting the role. He is looking forward to sightseeing today.
