Man was ‘thrown from Squiggly bridge’

A MAN was treated for hypothermia after apparently being thrown from a pedestrian footbridge into a river.

The 24-year-old is believed to have been pushed into the River Clyde, in Glasgow, from the Tradeston-Broomielaw Bridge – which has been dubbed the “Squiggly Bridge” because of its S-shape – by two men who then ran off.

Strathclyde Police said that prior to the incident, which happened at around 7:45pm on Wednesday night, he had been speaking to a group of men near the bridge. Emergency services were called and the man was safely pulled from the water before being taken to the city’s Royal Infirmary, where he was treated for hypothermia.

Detective Constable Alan Cuthbert, of Gorbals CID, is appealing to the public for information. He said: “This was a very frightening experience for the young man involved. We are continuing extensive inquiries into how he came to be in the water.

“However, it is believed that he was thrown into the water by at least two men who had been in his company earlier in the evening.

“We do know that there were several members of the public on the bridge at the time of the incident and I would like to speak to them, as they may be able to help with our inquiries.
