Man rescued from midnight blaze at flats

Firefighters tackled a blaze early yesterday as a fire ripped through a converted flat in Edinburgh.

A 24-year-old man was rescued and given oxygen at the scene before an ambulance took him to hospital.

The fire broke out around midnight at Pilrig Cottages, a row of cottages converted into flats.

It was being battled by crews for most of the night after spreading from the ground floor up two storeys to the roof.

The row is made up of nine cottages which have been turned into 18 flats across two levels.
