The fire took place in a ground floor flat at around midnight and spread to the upper flat and into the roof space. Firefighters used two hose reels to extinguish the flames.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "Neighbours from surrounding flats were evacuated as a precaution. There were also two canine fatalities from the fire."

More than 30 firefighters were also called to a fire at the Tranmare Hotel in Tranent just before 5am. The fire broke out in the bar area. Nobody was injured.
