Man proposes using flashmob airport greeting

But for passengers who touched down at Edinburgh Airport just after 10.30pm last night, an all-singing, all-dancing welcome did just that.

As they walked through the arrivals gate, Samuel Waldron and Sibylle Pausch were among those greeted by a flashmob who launched into a performance of KC and the Sunshine Band classic Baby Give It Up.

That came shortly after Samuel had popped the question to his girlfriend at 30,000 feet.

And the 31-year-old biology student, from Duns in the Borders, got himself a great big “Yes” from surgeon Sibylle, who comes from Frankfurt.

He said: “It has been a long-distance relationship for most of the time so it had to be on a plane really. I think the flashmob idea came from watching too much YouTube. It’s been the first time I’ve managed to surprise her in all the years we’ve been together. She’s got a ring on her finger and she said ‘yes’, so I don’t think it could have gone any better.”

Members of choir Sing in the City Aw Blacks had taken their positions ready for the arrival from Heathrow. The choir then burst into song, surrounding the couple and showering Sibylle, 28, with flowers, much to the surprise of onlookers.

Her mum Heather and sisters Esther and Jane were there to greet the couple. Heather said: “I think it’s wonderful what he’s done and the choir were fantastic.”

The choir’s musical director Kirsty Baird said it was great to be involved. She said: “It was fantastic to be asked and to be part of something so personal.”

A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said they wished the couple every happiness.

She said: “We are very excited for Samuel and Sibylle.”
