Man plunges 20ft after two-hour vigil

A 23-YEAR-OLD man was recovering in hospital last night after falling from a lamp post during a bizarre emergency incident in Dundee.

The man, who has still to be named, scaled the 20ft lamp standard yesterday morning and then stripped to his underpants as police negotiators tried to talk him down in the grounds of the Maryfield Medical Centre in the city's Mains Loan.

Tayside Police, a fire unit and aerial platform from Tayside Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service were called to the scene after the man was spotted on the lamp post near the Dundee Indoor Sports Centre.

Two hours after the incident began the man appeared to his lose his grip and plunged to the ground.

He landed on the grassy surface and escaped with non life threatening injuries.
