Man on murder charge after attack outside pub

A MAN has appeared in court charged with murder after a disturbance outside an East Lothian public house.

David McCardle, 40, from Musselburgh, was found with serious head injuries near the Clubhouse bar in the town's North High Street on Friday night.

He later died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. A 47-year-old man who was injured in the incident remains in a serious condition.

In addition, a 24-year-old man found with head injuries in Stoneybank Gardens North later is in a serious condition at St John's Hospital in Livingston.

Ross Tait, 21, of Musselburgh, appeared in private at Haddington Sheriff Court yesterday, charged with murder, assault and assault to severe injury and to the danger of life.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody. He is expected back in court in a week's time.

Lothian and Borders Police yesterday released a photograph of Mr McCardle in a plea for witnesses.

Detective Inspector John Peaston said: "We are continuing to appeal for information regarding the incident, and it is imperative that any witnesses who have not yet contacted the police get in touch."
