Man mugged as he listened to music on his phone

A MAN was assaulted and robbed by a mugger as he listened to music on his mobile phone.

The 27-year-old man had got off a bus in Commercial Street in Leith at around 11.50pm yesterday, and was walking home.

Reaching the junction of Gosford Place and Bonnington Grove, he became aware of someone behind him. As the victim turned around, the suspect punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The suspect then robbed the man of his personal belongings before making off towards Ferry Road and being lost to sight.

The man suffered minor injuries to his face but did not require hospital treatment.

Police are now appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything suspicious to come forward.

The suspect is described as male, white, between 25 and 28-years-old, 5ft 8in to 5ft 9in tall, with a slim build and short spiky ginger hair.

He was wearing a navy tracksuit top, a square shaped diamond earring in each ear and spoke with a local accent.

A police spokesman said: "This was a random and opportunistic assault and robbery that has not only resulted in the victim losing his valuables, but also suffering injuries to his face.

"Anyone who was in the area of Gosford Place and Bonnington Road and saw anything suspicious is asked to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the victim and can provide us with information as to his movements after fleeing towards Ferry Road is also asked to come forward."
