Man killed walking on M8

THE westbound carriageway of the M8 was closed last night after a man walking on the motorway was struck by a lorry and killed.

The accident happened at about 9:15pm near Harthill. Strathclyde Police said the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman said: "We received a report of a pedestrian being knocked down on the M8 westbound near Harthill. On arrival we confirmed he had been struck by a passing heavy goods vehicle which resulted in his death. Part of the westbound carriageway has been shut to allow a full police investigation."

It was not known last night why the man was on the motorway.
