Man jailed for life after dumbell attack

A MAN was branded a danger yesterday and given a life sentence for beating up a fellow inmate in prison.

Keith Porter, 23, who has a history of racist offending, carried out the attack on Daniel Kaizer, 28, in Aberdeen’s Craiginches jail only days after he had admitted an assault on another Polish man which was described by police as “barbaric”.

A judge told Porter that it was lucky Mr Kaizer had not been killed when he hit him over the head with a barbell in the prison gym.

“I am in no doubt you present a high level of danger to the public,” said judge Lord Woolman.

In November 2009, Porter pleaded guilty to attempting to murder Jaroslaw Janeczek, 39, in Aberdeen. An allegation that it had been a racially-motivated assault was deleted from the charge. He rammed a 3ft-long mop handle into Mr Janeczek, penetrating his stomach and narrowly missing his heart. The victim required life-saving surgery on his internal injuries.

Porter was jailed for nine years and four months.

Within a week of admitting that charge, he carried out the attempted murder of Mr Kaizer. This time, a jury held it had been a racially-aggravated incident.

Lord Woolman said it was “very troubling” that Porter had been convicted of two attempted murders within such a short period.

The judge noted that, although only 23, Porter had more than 30 previous convictions, many involving violence. In 2005, there had been four charges with a racial element.

He imposed an order for lifelong restriction, telling Porter that he would be released only if the parole board was satisfied that public safety would not be endangered.

Lord Woolman fixed five years as the minimum period which Porter must serve before he could even be considered for parole, and said it would run from the expiry of his current sentence.
