A police van was parked outside a block of new-build flats in the street yesterday afternoon, with another police car also parked up the road.

A resident in the street said: "I saw forensic officers milling about during the afternoon. There was also an officer talking to council binmen so I think they were checking bins."

A police spokeswoman said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to a serious assault in Maritime Street in Leith at around 11.55pm on Thursday."
