Man in hospital after attack

A man was in hospital today after he was subjected to a "sustained and violent attack" in broad daylight.

The 45-year-old was walking along Houston Street, Renfrew, at around 1pm yesterday when a man attacked him with a blunt instrument.

The attacker then chased his victim into Wilson Street in the Renfrewshire town where he continued to assault him.

An ambulance took the man to Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment to his injuries, which included lacerations.

Hospital staff described his condition as stable.

Strathclyde Police appealed for information about the incident.

Detective Sergeant Drew Piper said: "This man has suffered a sustained and violent attack and it is imperative that we trace the person responsible.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Houston Street and Wilson Street yesterday afternoon who may have witnessed the incident, or heard a disturbance, to come forward to police."

The suspect is described as white, about 45 years old, around 6ft tall and of heavy build.

He had short, black hair and a tanned complexion and was wearing a black tracksuit at the time of the incident.
