Man in custody over Janice Galloway ‘stalking’

Classical musician Graeme McNaught, 54, was refused bail during a hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh in connection with alleged incidents at the writer’s home earlier this month.

McNaught was arrested on Saturday at his home in Mount Vernon, Glasgow, and originally appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday.

He was granted bail at that time but Crown prosecutors immediately appealed the decision.

A bail hearing was held at the High Court yesterday and he was remanded in custody.

As well as the stalking offence, McNaught faces two breach of the peace charges and one of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

He has made no plea to the charges and is due to appear in court again next week for a full committal hearing.

Miss Galloway, 58, lives with opera singer husband Jonathan May in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, and has a 22-year-old son to former partner McNaught.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “Graeme McNaught appeared for a bail hearing at the High Court at Edinburgh and was remanded in custody.”

Her debut novel The Trick Is To Keep Breathing was followed by top sellers such as Foreign Parts, which won the pounds 10,000 McVittie Prize for fiction in 1994.

In 2003 the couple performed together on stage at a festival in Aberdeen.

She was the first Scottish Arts Council writer-in-residence to Barlinnie, Cornton Vale, Dungavel and Polmont prisons and has written and presented series for BBC Radio Scotland.

Miss Galloway also published the second volume in her acclaimed memoirs, All Made Up, describing her time at Glasgow University in 2012.

The first, This Is Not About Me, about her childhood in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, won the SMIT Non-Fiction Book of the Year in 2009.

The memoirs, which have been acclaimed by critics and fans, are now being made into a film.

McNaught is a world-renowned concert pianist and recording artist and has performed across the globe.

He used to teach piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, formerly known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, but recently stopped.
