Man in court over attempted Dundee shop robbery

The 50-year-old shopkeeper was assaulted during the raid on the Best One Food Store in Dundee’s Cleghorn Street on Saturday night.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “The shopkeeper sustained a neck and chest injury as a result of the assault and was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital where he has since undergone surgery. His condition is described as serious but stable.

“A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and will appear at Dundee Sheriff Court.”

Detective Inspector Brian Smith, who is heading the investigation, thanked members of the public who went to the shopkeeper’s aid and those who provided assistance to officers at the scene.

He added: “This was a particularly brutal assault on the shopkeeper and I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident who has not yet spoken to police to get in touch with Police Scotland Tayside Division on 101.”

Meanwhile detectives in Dundee are continuing their investigation into a robbery at the Super City News convenience store in the city’s Lochee Road on Friday.

A force spokesman said: “A man entered the store and threatened the female shop assistant with a knife before stealing a three figure sum of cash. The man then left the shop and his direction of travel is unknown.

“The shop assistant was shaken as a result of the incident, but was uninjured.”

The man being sought is described as aged between 20 and 30, 5ft 10ins tall, and of slim build.

He was wearing a dark coloured hooded jacket, jeans and white coloured trainers.

A force spokesman said: “Detectives are looking at police and private CCTV in an effort to identify the person responsible. Anyone who saw the man or who has any information that could assist police enquiries should contact Police Scotland on 101, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or speak to any officer.”
