Man hit his mother over head with a hammer

A DRUNK man hit his mother on the head with a hammer before dragging her out of their house and throwing her outside with her dogs after a family row.

Derek Heeney, who left his mother, Rosemary Lynch, covered in blood told police he felt like it had “been a dream”. He later trashed her house and barricaded the door with a TV.

Heeney had been out drinking with a friend when he returned to the home he shared with his mother in Glenconnor Drive, Dundee, shortly after midnight on 16 June last year.

His friend passed out on a sofa – prompting Ms Lynch to tell Heeney to wake up the other man.

Fiscal depute Bill Kermode told Dundee Sheriff Court that Heeney shouted abuse at his mother before making food and storming to his bedroom. He returned five minutes later and again started shouting at his mother.

Mr Kermode said: “The accused swung a hammer at his mother, hitting her on the head.

“His mother landed on the floor and the accused took hold of her and dragged her to the front door and put her out the door with the three dogs.

“The accused’s mother made her way to a friend’s house. She arrived covered in blood and it took her five minutes to calm down enough to speak, but she would not say what happened.

“When police arrived, the complainer was in an upstairs bathroom washing her head in the shower.

“She appeared to be shaking and in a state of shock. She was found to have a half-inch straight linear cut to the back of her head which was bleeding profusely.”

He added: “He told police that he ‘just lost it… it was like a big dream. I just lost control.’”
