Man held over student's death

A 22-YEAR-OLD man was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of Reamonn Gormley.

The student was on his way home with a friend after watching football in a pub in Blantyre when he was stabbed.

The 19-year-old died in hospital after he was attacked in Glasgow Road at about 10:55pm on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "A 22-year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with the death. A report will be forwarded to the procurator-fiscal."

The 19-year-old had spent time as a community volunteer in Thailand, teaching schoolchildren English. In a video uploaded to Youtube, he can be seen laughing with the youngsters as he teaches them the words to a Celtic song. The work was indicative of Mr Gormley's kind nature, which also saw him carrying out numerous charity runs to support St Andrew's Hospice in Airdrie. Two years ago, he climbed Ben Nevis to raise funds for the organisation.

Viewers on Youtube also paid tribute to the teenager.
