Man dies after being struck by 'a number of vehicles' on M8 in West Lothian

Police Scotland has announced that a male pedestrian died in the early hours of this morning, after being struck by a number of vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 near East Whitburn.

The incident happened at 2.45am on New Year’s Day and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

A ‘number of vehicles’ are said to have struck the man near to junction 4 at East Whitburn, Bathgate.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.45am on Friday, 1 January, 2021, a male pedestrian died after being struck by a number of vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 near to junction 4 at East Whitburn.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.”

The road was previously closed westbound between junction 3a and junction 4 for eight hours following the incident.

Traffic Scotland announced that lanes are now open and running in both directions.

Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
