Man in court over rape on footpath

A MAN has appeared in court in connection with a rape in Livingston.

Barry Iain MacMillan, 26, appeared on petition in private at Livingston Sheriff Court yesterday.

MacMillan, from Livingston was charged with rape and breach of the peace.

He made no plea or declaration and the case was continued for further inquiries.

He was remanded in custody until a second court appearance scheduled for November 19.

His appearance followed an alleged incident in which a 27-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the Ladywell area of Livingston on Wednesday.

Police said they were keen to talk to anyone who was on the public footpath between Cedarbank and Cloverbank at around 5.15pm on the day of the attack.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This has been a terrifying ordeal for the young woman involved."
