Man charged over death of tragic Brian

A MAN has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a young man who died two weeks after being allegedly assaulted in the street.

Brian Lawrie, 22, of Stoneybank Drive, Musselburgh, died at the Western General Hospital on Tuesday after spending a fortnight in a coma.

He had been receiving treatment as a result of injuries sustained during an alleged assault outside the Wiremill Social Club in Musselburgh on 21 February.

A 28-year-old man had already appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court in connection with this incident. He was set to reappear at the court yesterday.

Mr Lawrie's family were already grieving for the death of his mother, Karen, who died from a haemorrhage in December. In Friday's edition of the Evening News, it was wrongly stated that she had been suffering from cancer.

Friends had said Mr Lawrie worked as a bank teller with the Bank of Scotland, but at the time of his death he was employed by a marketing company in York Place in Edinburgh.

A keen fisherman, Mr Lawrie was also an attendant at Musselburgh's Honest Lad and Lass celebrations in 2008. Members of the Honest Toun Association, (HTA), which organises the annual event, have paid tribute to Mr Lawrie following his death.

His late mother was formerly a member of the HTA, while his father, Brian, is a well-known tradesman in East Lothian.
