Man attacked by thugs in tweed jackets and ties

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was attacked in the Cowgate area in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 2.30am when a 33-year-old man was walking near the junction with Candlemaker Row. He was struck from behind and then assaulted by a group of between six to twelve men. The victim was left with a broken arm and facial injuries and was takento Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

A number of witnesses have identified this group of men as being in their late 20’s, most of whom were wearing tweed jackets or suits, shirts, ties and brogues. They then headed up Victoria Street, where they were lost to sight.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart said: “This appears to have been an unprovoked assault which left the victim needing hospital treatment.

“We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of the Cowgate around 2.30am on Sunday morning, and who saw this altercation take place.

“The group of suspects have been described as wearing distinctive tweed jackets, and so we hope this description will assist in jogging people’s memories, particularly if they have information on which pub or bar they were in beforehand.”
