The arrested man, who is aged 30, is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today.

Police launched a hunt for three masked men after the shooting, which took place in broad daylight. Two other men who were in the black Audi with Carroll were uninjured.

Horrified shoppers who were in the car park at the time were questioned by detectives.

Two days after the shooting, police found a getaway car, a dark blue Volkswagen Golf, that had been spotted at the scene.

It had been set on fire and dumped about six miles from the crime scene, in Yetts Hole Road, Glenmavis, Airdrie.

On 29 January, police confirmed a stash of firearms found behind Coatbridge Library had been used in the shooting.
