Two men allegedly entered the bar at about 8:20pm on Sunday while up to 30 drinkers were inside. Mr Carlin was allegedly shot in the leg with a firearm and a "melee ensued" during which Mr Carlin was allegedly stabbed in the upper leg area and punched in the head.

The suspects fled along London Road towards Meadowbank Stadium after the attack.

Yesterday, specialist search officers checked wheelie bins in the area in the hunt for a weapon.

Police said they had spoken to the victim at the ERI, where he was treated, and intend to speak with him again.

Detective Inspector Colin Boyle said: "The use of any type of firearm in any crime is extremely serious.

"These incidents are relatively rare in Edinburgh. We're still trying to trace some of the 20 to 30 people who were in the bar. Forensic and ballistic tests are continuing to identify the type of firearm used.

"We are, however, confident that it was a firearm, not an air weapon, which was discharged once."

The Jock's Lodge remained cordoned off by officers today, and police said the bar may remain closed for "some considerable time" while the probe continues.

Police officers today said they have arrested and charged a 27-year-old man who is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow.
