Man arrested over sheltered housing death

A MAN has been detained by police in connection with the suspicious death of an elderly woman in a sheltered housing complex in Edinburgh.

The body of 74-year-old Rosie Sutherland was discovered in Longstone Park, at around 2pm on Sunday.

It is understood she was found by a member of her family.

Lothian and Borders Police are treating her death as suspicious and forensic officers have been examining the scene. Detectives are trying to establish what time she died, which may have been the previous night.

The man is understood to have been taken into custody on Sunday night.

A police spokeswoman said: “A man has been detained after the death of a woman in the Longstone area of the city.

“Just after 2pm on Sunday, 30 October, police were called to a house at Longstone Park where the body of a 74-year-old woman was discovered.

“The house is part of a sheltered housing complex and the area is now cordoned off while police and forensics carry out a detailed examination.

“The death is being treated as suspicious at this time and there is no further information to offer.”

Edinburgh City Council said that it was working with police.

A spokesman for the local authority said: “We are liaising with our colleagues at Lothian and Borders Police regarding this incident and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
