Man arrested after four-hour siege at Annan flat

A MAN has been arrested after a four-hour siege which forced the evacuation of several properties in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway.

Police were called to Esk Place at about 6.20pm yesterday following reports of a disturbance.

There, they found a man had entered a first-floor flat and was refusing to leave.

Police negotiators and firearms officers were called to the scene after the man was assessed as a considerable risk to himself and others.

Officers said the property, where the man was on his own, was secured and a decision was taken to evacuate six surrounding flats.

A 20-year-old man from the local area was later arrested in connection with alleged serious public order offences.

He is expected to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court tomorrow.

Inspector Graeme Kerr, of Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, said members of the public were not in any direct danger during the incident.

He said: "Because of the swift deployment of local police officers, the flat in question was quickly secured and the occupant contained.

"Public safety was of paramount importance and as a precaution the neighbouring flats were evacuated. Those moved out of their homes were accommodated at a local sports hall which was opened as a reception centre.

"The local officers were supported by public order and firearms officers because of the potential threat, however at no time were any members of the public placed in any direct danger."

Mr Kerr went on to thank members of the local community for their support during the incident.
