The road was closed in both directions for six hours as investigators attended the scene.

Police said Ms Coulter, from Whitburn, West Lothian, could have been hit by other vehicles as they travelled west along the road without the driver realising, and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Inspector David Milne from Lothian and Borders Police said: "We are considering the possibility that other motorists may have hit the victim as they travelled west on the M8 at around 11pm, after the initial collision.

"They may have been unaware of striking her at the time, but may now suspect otherwise. If so, we would urge them to get in touch."

Friends and family of the former Inveralmond Community High pupil have been posting tributes to her on the social networking website Facebook.
